Building relationships drives Jess

St John of God Accord psychologist Jess Ducat says the relationships she is able to establish with clients is one of the highlights of her job working with people with intellectual disability.

What is your role at St John of God Accord?

So as a psychologist here at St John of God Accord and working with individuals with an intellectual disability it’s recognised we are all people and that is our universal commonality.
Through the relationships we build we get to understand the individuals’ story and the journey that they have been on. We are able to foster and develop those longer lasting relationships.
It is a real privilege to be able to work side by side with an individual to reach their full potential. Whether it is through building their quality of life or helping them through creating a capable environment, mental health distress, or anything they are struggling with.

What do you love about working with St John of God Accord?

It is really important and one of the perks I guess of working within this space and working with individuals with an intellectual disability which is otherwise a population which is marginalised is giving voice back to the person and its goes without saying that part of philosophy is nothing about us without us.

What would you say to someone thinking of working at St John of God Accord?

I strongly encourage you to put in your application not only due to the location of Melbourne, the wonderful culture, but also to be part of a really fabulous allied health team and making a difference in an individual’s life.
